Phonemic Awareness Practice
In school, we practice phonemic awareness skills, which assists students in being able to isolate, blend, and manipulate sounds in words.
You can practice these skills at home with your child! There are 9 skills to practice each day, however you do not need to do each of these skills each day. If you have limited time, you can choose 4 one day, and do the other 5 for the next day so they have exposure to all skills throughout the week. These specific practice materials are retrieved from Heggerty.org where you can find more resources available.

- Sight Word Rainbow Writing
- In school, we practice rainbow writing our sight words. This repetitive process helps children become familiar with recognizing, spelling, and writing the word.
- Your child will write a word in a color crayon. Then once they've written the whole word in one color, they will get another color and write on top of the existing word. Write the word 5 times and then move on to another word.

- Write a sight word on each small piece.
- Put the sight words in a hat or bowl and mix them up.
- Your child will reach into the hat/bowl and pick a word.
- They need to come up with a sentence using that word and write the sentence down. Have them underline the selected sight word.
- Then your child will pick another word and repeat the process.
