Reading!
Read, read read! If you have books at home, make sure your child is reading often. Have them read familiar books to you, and for more challenging books you can read together to provide guidance.
When reading ask them comprehension questions:
- Is it fiction or nonfiction?
- Fiction is FAKE
- Nonfiction is REAL
- If it's fiction...
- Who are the characters?
- What is the setting?
- When does the story take place?
- What are the events? Beginning, middle, end
- Is there a problem? What's the solution?
- Do the characters work as a team? How?
- Is there a moral or lesson to the story?
- How can you apply that moral/lesson to your life?
- If you could change one part of the story, what would you change and why? (characters, setting, events, etc.)
- If it's nonfiction...
- What's the main topic?
- What are key details to support the main topic?
- What information have we learned?
- What nonfiction text features are being used?
- Nonfiction Text Features (have your child identify from the provided features)
- What is a nonfiction text feature you think you could add to help the reader learn more?
- Why do you think the author wanted us to learn about this specific topic?
- How can we apply this knowledge to our understanding of the world?
